Terms to Avoid

Eliminate slurs and derogatory language

• Words like "f*g," "dyke," or "that’s gay" are never acceptable.

• Instead of "Don’t be soft," say "Stay focused" or "Push through."

Avoid gendered insults 

• Instead of "Man up" or "Don’t be a girl," say "Stay strong" or "Give it your best."

• Instead of "You throw like a girl," focus on technique: "Follow through with your arm."

Correct Misgendering

• If someone uses the wrong pronouns, gently correct: "Actually, Alex uses they/them."​

• If corrected, try "thanks for correcting me" instead of endless apologizing.

​Avoid assumptions

• "Who’s your support system?" instead of "Do your mom and dad come to games?"

• "Do you have a preferred uniform fit?" instead of assuming preferences or sizes ​
